A fun twist on a classic comfort dish, perfect for spooky season gatherings with gooey cheese and playful colors.

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces macaroni
  • 2 cups cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • Green food coloring (as needed)
  • Creepy plastic spiders (for decoration)

Instructions

  1. Cook the macaroni: Bring a pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the macaroni according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  2. Prepare the roux: In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the flour, garlic powder, and onion powder to create a roux. Stir continuously for about 1-2 minutes until it’s lightly golden.
  3. Create the cheese sauce: Gradually add the milk to the roux, stirring continuously for 3-4 minutes until the sauce thickens and bubbles.
  4. Mix in the cheese: Stir in the cheddar cheese until it melts completely, resulting in a creamy cheese sauce.
  5. Add color: Use green food coloring to tint the cheese sauce if desired, mixing until you reach the preferred shade.
  6. Combine with macaroni: Fold the cooked macaroni into the cheese sauce, ensuring every piece is evenly coated.
  7. Decorate and serve: Spoon the mac and cheese into bowls and top with creepy plastic spiders for a fun, spooky effect.

Notes

Stir the cheese sauce continuously while cooking to avoid burning. Aim for al dente macaroni as it will cook further when mixed with the cheese sauce.
